Today, Mya from summer mentorship, got the opportunity to join Impact Church in a prayer walk. Impact Church holds a prayer walk each month at various locations of the Maywood community to pray for healing and growth within and to bring awareness to the challenges Maywood faces. This month, it took place at a local high school, Proviso East. In this walk we got to pray for the school and it’s students as well as cleaning around the parking lot to keep the area nice and clean.

The Quinn Center

Our mentees were able to experience taking pictures at the Quinn Center here in Maywood. They took pictures of the kids at the Quinn Center’s annual summer camp and they were able to put into practice what they had been learning from previous workshops. We got tons of great content that showcased their new photography skills!

We are grateful to have collaborated with the Quinn Center!

How long have you lived in Maywood?:

42 years

What are you loving about Maywood?:

I love the block that I live on because it's quiet and I have neighbors that have lived on this block my entire life.

Favorite memory in Maywood?:

I remember playing double dutch sun up to sun down and riding bikes with my sister and friends.

What opportunities has Maywood brought to your family?:

This is my childhood home where my mom and dad brought me from Panama City Florida at 6 months old. I am very blessed to have lived in one house my entire life. This community has allowed me and my family to get a good education for grade and high school as well as taught me and my sister dance. We have lifelong friends in the community as well.

What hopes do you have for your Maywood community?:

I hope that this community can get back to what it used to be, which is a peaceful place that is great for raising children.

What is something that your family enjoys doing together?:

We enjoy hanging out at the neighboring movie theatre, as well as going to the Maywood library. We love to have barbeques in the back yard with friends and family just enjoying each others company.

Peace Garden Cleanup

The Interns put their photography and film skills to the test at Maywood’s Peace Garden, created by Barbra Cole. They captured the hard work of the community as they worked to restore the Peace Garden for summer. The Interns also tracked the progress of a potential mural collaboration with the Firehouse! Thank you Ms. Cole for the invitation!

Thank you Mariah, our Intern, for taking these magnificent pictures!

PROVISO FOOD & RESOURCE COALITION

fooddrive_june6-18.jpg

We are continuing to support our community with food, wellness check-in’s and more. Our food coalition officially has a name too, we are now called the Proviso Food & Resources Coalition. We are made up of 5 locally led organizations called: Best of Proviso Township, NextGen Church, Impact Church, God’s Heritage Church, and The Firehouse Dream. I love how we are a multi racial and multi-generational coalition, and it’s been nothing but a pure joy to collaborate and partner with these amazing organizations!

We also had many of other organizations partner with for our Food Distribution on June 6th. The way God has brought an abundance of food and community had been amazing!

Special thanks to: Maywood Police, Village of Maywood, Maywood Census, PP4H, Freedom Fighters, HOJO, The Greater Northern Food Depository, Forty Acres, UTURN Covenant church, UTURN Covenant Church, many individual donors and more!
