For the first part of mentorship today, the mentees got some tips on how to edit pictures. There were some additional notes they got to take on how to improve an edit, correct color, and decide what pictures will make the cut. Once they were done with this workshop, they got a chance to finish their edits from the Painting With Seniors workshop from last Thursday.

For the second part of mentorship today, the mentees got to learn about storytelling from Rebecca. She explained how showing more detail within your story can help to improve your readers’ experience. This also connects to editing and photos since this is a visual aspect which shows someone what the story was all about. The mentees wrote a short story of their own experiences then shared with a partner to exchange some advice. After this they got a chance to share with the whole group the creative stories they wrote!

For today’s workshop, the mentees had a guest speaker, Jaleel Anthony, who shared his inspirational story about how he wanted to make a difference and help to improve his community and assist the people in it. He also shared how setting goals are important and how to do so, as well as having a positive belief in yourself and your potential. The mentees enjoyed the opportunity to gain new knowledge from a fellow young adult from the community and how to become the best version of themselves. In this workshop, the mentees got a chance to learn more about what a brand is. They discussed what The Firehouse Dream brand means and how that would apply it to different aspects content creation. After this discussion, the mentees got the chance to create ideas for stickers and key chains while keeping in mind what The Firehouse Dream’s brand is all about. There were some great ideas with a lot of thought put behind them! We can’t wait to see which stickers get selected and become a part of our store.

Today in mentorship, our mentees got to learn how to upload photos onto an online gallery website called Shootproof, which allows for us to store all of the photos the mentees take in one space, and then they can share gallery links to any of our community partners. Afterwards, some mentees wanted to get their headshots taken. They had to interview the mentee who wanted to have headshots taken to best learn what locations to use. After the photoshoot, they learned how to import their photos using the wifi feature on their dslrs to their phones and used then used an app called A Color Story to edit their photos. This workshop was led by Ross LaSalle, who is an alumni mentee from our spring cohort. This was a great chance for them to learn how to edit photos quickly and easily on their phones. We love seeing all the growth our mentees have experienced over the last 3 weeks and can’t wait to see where they end up at the end of mentorship.
