Today, our mentees got a lesson from Carlos Arteaga about wordmarking and Adobe Illustrator. They got to learn about different programs to make logos and the basics in adobe illustrator, like how to clean edges on a logo. The mentee used different shapes to practice these things. They also learned the differences of fonts and styles of wording that evoke different feelings about a certain brand. Next, the mentees got a chance to create their own logo with their own brand or name to put their newfound skill to practice.

Today in mentorship, our mentees learned what a brand really is from Deon Bonaparte. He explained that when creating a brand, you give the consumer a gut feeling, which then will create trust, which ultimately goes back around to what the brand is. They discussed the differences between brands and how the actions they take can impact multiple aspects of that specific brand. They also talked about what they think is the most important part of a brand; People, processes, or product. Deon had a lot of great things to share with the group and the mentees learned a lot today about what it really takes for a brand to be successful.

There were some additional notes they got to take on how to improve an edit, correct color, and decide what pictures will make the cut. Once they were done with this workshop, they got a chance to finish their edits from the Painting With Seniors workshop from last Thursday.

For the second part of mentorship today, the mentees got to learn about storytelling from Rebecca. She explained how showing more detail within your story can help to improve your readers’ experience. This also connects to editing and photos since this is a visual aspect which shows someone what the story was all about. The mentees wrote a short story of their own experiences then shared with a partner to exchange some advice. After this they got a chance to share with the whole group the creative stories they wrote!
